Process for controlling and regulating the active potential of heat treating gases and protective gases comprises placing functional values calculated from the cell voltage and temperature of a solid electrolyte measuring cell to a heat treating gas or protective gas in relation to corresponding functional values which deliver thermodynamic calculations to the system to be treated or protected, judging the active potential of the gas based on this relationship and regulating. An independent claim is also included for a device for carrying out the process.
