Two acoustic transducers have beam axes which cross within a material or tissue. The sound wave trains or impulses emitted by the transducers meet at this point. The sound power of the wave train from one transducer is set so that there is significant nonlinear wave propagation at the crossing point, so that it can influence the other wave train. The influenced or modulated wave train is reflected and used to determine characteristics at the crossing point.
