Microbial production of L-alanine comprises anaerobic fermentation of a genetically modified microorganism (A) in which (a) catabolic reactions that start from pyruvate have been switched off and (b) an ald gene (I), encoding an L-alanine dehydrogenase (ALD), has been introduced and expressed. Independent claims are also included for the following: (1) the genetically modified microorganisms (A); (2) nucleic acid (Ia) that encodes ALD, for use in (A); (3) gene structure (GC) that contains (Ia); and (4) vector containing at least one (Ia) or GC.
