Method and apparatus that use activated oxygen (A) e.g. ozone to reduce: (a) levels of volatile organic compounds (VOC) and fire-accelerating aerosols (X) in air and (b) deposition of fire-accelerating and odor-forming materials (Y) on surfaces of systems being used to transport outgoing air or of closed ventilation systems. (A) is generated to reduce the ozone load and reduce oxidative damage and corrosion on treated surfaces. Method and apparatus that use activated oxygen (A), especially ozone, to reduce (a) levels of volatile organic compounds (VOC) and fire-accelerating aerosols (X) in outgoing air and (b) deposition of fire-accelerating and odor-forming materials (Y) on surfaces of systems being used to transport outgoing air or of closed ventilation systems. The new feature is that (A) is generated, according to demand, so as to reduce (a) the ozone load at the outlet side and (b) oxidative damage, and thus corrosion, on treated surfaces, after decomposition of deposits of (Y).
