The method determines the ship's velocity (13) using a movable stabilization fin (3) or rudder, with a signal supplied to a drive device (2) for the latter which results in a roll movement of increasing amplitude with increasing ship's velocity, the roll acceleration detected via sensors (8) for determination of the ship's velocity from the drive force (5) of the stabilization fin or rudder.
