A host vehicle in an adaptive cruise control (ACC) mode, is operated at a preset speed. When an in-path vehicle is detected along the host vehicle path, the ACC mode slows the speed of host vehicle until the in-path vehicle moves out of path. The traffic density around the host vehicle is detected, according to which the ACC mode adjust the auto-resume acceleration rate inversely proportional to the traffic. An Independent claim is also included for an automatic cruise control system.
