An automatic control unit for stopping an idling motor vehicle engine and restarting it using an A.C. motor or generator (21), where the temperature of semiconductor switching elements (220) of A.C. to D.C. converter (22) that drive the motor or generator during a restart are measured or estimated automatic engine operation is prevented if the temperature exceeds a threshold, in order to prevent overheating of the switching elements during a subsequent restart.
