Device for removal of a large volume ground body (10) from the ground has: a trough shaped lysimeter container (12) acting as the removal container that has a closed end (12a) and an open end (12b); a guide device (14) for alignment of the container in a start trench and; a drive device (16) for horizontal driving of the container in the direction of its opens side into the ground body that is to be removed. An Independent claim is made for a method for horizontal removal of a monolithic ground or soil sample.
