The lifting apparatus is for lifting tarpaulin and the like on lorries etc. The apparatus includes an air tube (1) arranged underneath and in the middle of the tarpaulin and arranged along the length direction of the vehicle. A compressor is provided for inflation. This is connected to the open air for emptying. The tube is made of plastic or rubber or other heavy textile. At least two further air tubes (16) are arranged either side of the middle tube and parallel. In the inflated states the diameter of the outer tubes are less than that of the middle tube and keep the sides of the tarpaulin at the same slope. The tarpaulin upper surface is at least slightly greater than the angle need for water to run off the tarpaulin and for snow and ice to slide off.
