The letter opener has a blade (1) and handle (2) and also an adjustable weighing cutter (8) operable for letters of a certain weight. The blade extends over the entire length of the opener and the handle has a longitudinally slit U-shaped body which holds between its two U-webs the flat handle area of the blade completely without play. The handle region of the blade is fixed in a defined longitudinal position on the handle, e.g. by screws. The handle is cast from zinc with a powder coating.
