A caravan or a camper van has an external awning consisting of a roof and side curtains. The caravan or camper van has a U-shaped piping groove (5) which receives the piping (4) forming the roof outer margin. The roof and curtain are supported by a U-shaped three-part frame (1, 2) resting (3) against the vehicle outer sidewall. The frame has a width-adjustable telescopic section (1).
