A hoist for moving loads up and down a staircase has two rails (3, 4) with U-cross section and with a rack (11) in the bottom of each groove. The rails support a wheeled trolley with a load platform (12) which folds flat against one side of the staircase when not used. The trolley cross members (6) are telescopic to pull the trolley into a compact storage position, while the outer rail is pulled towards the inner fixed rail when not used. The trolley drive has pinion wheels gripping the racks.
