Each stud has a foundation portion (7) buried in the road surface and has an upward projecting portion (2-6) which has a sawtooth cross-section. The steep face of the sawtooth faces the oncoming traffic. The tires of the vehicles make a noise when they run over the studs. The sides of the studs slope gently down to the level of the road surface and may exert a steering effect on the wheels.
