The buffer for rail vehicles comprises two housing sections sliding one into the other and with at least one section having a slot base (11) to accommodate a feather key (6) extending from one end of a tube section (9). The end of the slot is widened and the slot base extends constantly up to the end of the widening. The width of the slot, measured at the end of the widening, corresponds to 1.2 - 2 times the width of the slot (10). The end of the slot may be convex or concave in its construction. An independent claim is included for a buffer sleeve (2) with a slot.
