The link chain has at least every other link as a flat chain link (3), and with vertical orientation, has in the region of its sides connecting the round ends a smaller maximum diameter in the vertical direction than in the horizontal direction. The flat chain links have a cross sectional surface ratio between their cross sectional surface in the region of the sides and cross sectional surface in the center sections of the round ends which is greater than 0.55 but less than 0.85.
