A security seal, e.g. customs seal, for a container has a hoop shaped bar with ratchet ends which secure into a locking housing in such a way that the seal can only be opened by destroying the lock. The hoop and lock are made of the same transparent plastic with smooth outer surfaces which clearly show any unauthorised attempts to force the seal. The lock is assembly by a simple push fit operation and is removed by cutting. The seal can have a clear filler which changes colour if the seal is broken or subjected to high temperature heating. A bar code identity can be included in the seal.
