A compact lift system has four vertical support rails on one side of the lift shaft, with the lift cage supported between two rails (2.1, 2.2) and the ballast weight supported between the other two rails (3.1, 3.2). The lift drive unit is fitted between two diagonally opposite support rails, and comprises a slim mounting located between the rails. The cables are arranged so that the vertical force on the system is accommodated by the support rails, without any large lateral forces.
