A coating system, especially for vehicle wheels and body parts, has a reflective layer (13) applied by vacuum sputtering onto a levelling layer (12) which has a smooth surface (12a) roughness of not less than 0.5 mu , provided on a base surface (11). Preferably, the levelling layer (12) consists of a modified epoxy resin applied by powder coating, or consists of a lacquer, preferably a wet lacquer or metallisation lacquer. Also claimed is a coating method, involves applying the levelling layer (12) of not less than 0.5 mu surface roughness onto the base surface (11), surface treating the levelling layer, especially by plasma treatment, and then applying the reflective layer (13) by vacuum sputtering.
