An X-ray fluorescence elemental analyzer has an X-ray source (20) and an X-ray fluorescence detector (10) for detecting X-ray fluorescence from the sample and for producing signals in response to the X-ray fluorescence. At least one X-ray source and at least one X-ray fluorescence detector are mounted in such a way that X-ray detection and sensitivity are maximized. Preferred Features: At least one X-ray fluorescence detector is mounted within 2 inches of the sample. At least one X-ray source is a transmission axis and one X-ray fluorescence detector is a detection axis which are aligned 30[deg] C of the sample's normal surface. The X-ray transmission axis and the detection axis are parallel to each other and normal to the sample surface. At least one X-ray source and one X-ray fluorescence detector are disposed in a backscattering geometry.
