A medium for the culturing and production of acarids (mites) of the species Dermatophagoides pteronyssinus, Dermatophagoides farinae, Blomia kulagini, Blomia tropicalis, Pyroglyphus africanus and Euroglyptus maynei, which is free from human or animal elements or proteins and comprises a number of amino acids in particulate form with particle size below 250 micro m or in a lyophilized form, is new. The medium comprises amino acids obtained by grinding and/or lyophilized amino acids and/or those available commercially. and also contains salts. The mixture of amino acids comprises at least 50 % of the amino acids which are natural constituents of proteins or their equivalents. It may either reproduce the spectrum of amino acids constituting keratin or stratum corneum or that of those constituting shrimp eggs or soya and in similar proportions. It also comprises other element normal to nutrient media for the culture of acarids which provide additional nutrients and/or give the medium a suitable texture. An Independent claim is included for a method of culture and production of the specified acarids using the claimed medium.
