The device comprises a face cover - (12), a mask oro - nose (14) and means for holding the covers - face on the face. The covers - face (12) is provided with a flexible seal around the eyes, the sealing means at its periphery and a connection which can be closed off (30) to a supply of filtered gas. The mask oro - nose, placed in the covers - face, is equipped with a demand regulator and a direct escape to the atmosphere. The breathe-in and breathe-out paths are separated by housings (20, 22).
