The variable transmission for an engine block of a motor cycle consists of a belt drive (13) between a drive pulley (4) and a driven pulley (21) whose diameters are continuously variable to give speed change. Between these two pulleys is fitted a guide roller (33) which has a stepped periphery so that the gap between it and the inside of the belt (13) is reduced when the transmission speed is high and increased when the transmission speed is reduced by the variation in position of the belt.
