A peroxisome-combined ascorbate peroxidase polypeptide which is derived from barley and consists of the amino acid sequence (a) or (b). (I) (fully defined 291 amino acid sequence given in the spec); (b) a peroxisome-combined ascorbate peroxidase polypeptide in which the expression is induced by thermal stress and part of the amino acid sequence (a) is deleted, replaced or added. An Independent claim is also included for a gene encoding the above polypeptide, a gene which is derived from barley and consists of the base sequence (c) or (d): (c) a peroxisome-combined ascorbate peroxidase gene consisting of the base sequence shown by the base Nos. 1 to 1089 in Seq. No. (II) (fully defined 1089 amino acid sequence given in the spec); (d) a peroxisome-combined ascorbate peroxidase gene in which the expression is induced by thermal stress and part of the base sequence (c) is deleted, replaced or added, a method for giving heat resistance to a plant by introducing the above peroxisome-combined ascorbate peroxidase gene to the plant, and a transformed plant in which the above peroxisome-combined ascorbate peroxidase gene is introduced to the plant.
