The traffic lights are controlled by signaling beacons located on the corners of a cross-roads. Each beacon has a field of transmission which covers a section of road and pavement. Mobile transceivers within this area detect the beacon code transmitted by the beacon, and re-transmit a further beacon code for comparison in all beacons, and subsequent control of lights. Each signaling beacon (Bi) is identified by a beacon code which it alone transmits. Each mobile device in the vicinity comprises a transmitter and a receiver which serves to trigger the visible signaling beacon (Bi). The mobile transceiver device (1) is positioned in the transmission field (CH1) of the visible beacon (B1). After receiving the beacon code, the transceiver re-transmits a beacon code (CB), and each fixed signaling beacon compares the beacon code (CB) received from the transceiver with the beacon code (CBi) which identifies it. If the received and identifying beacon codes match, then this automatically triggers one of several predetermined actions.
