The levelling attachment consists of an extending leg fitted to the ladder side member (20). The leg has one or more projecting pegs (6) that engage with notches (4) in a sleeve fastened to the ladder by brackets (17) and clamps (18). The notches are in staggered rows on either side of a vertical slot in the sleeve, and each notch is angled in shape, with two oblique sides, so that the peg fits against the upper inner end of a notch and cannot disengage accidentally. The brackets (17) have plates (16) with holes (23) for additional fastening bolts (24) connecting them to the ladder's side member.
