Process for the isomerization of the double bond in an olefin by the use of a Bronsted acid dissolved in an ionic liquid, the molar ratio of Bronsted acid / ionic liquid being 1 less than 1 / 1 when the anions of the two compounds are identical. The isomerization is carried out using a catalytic composition consisting of a Bronsted acid, HB, dissolved in a non-aqueous liquid with ionic character, general formula Q+A-, in which Q is an organic cation and A- is an anion ; when A and B are identical, the molar ratio of Bronsted acid to ionic liquid is less than 1 / 1.
