During the controlled auto-ignition operation a modeled combustion process (4) is formed with the aid of regulated values (2) influencing the combustion process. Output quantities (6) of the modeled combustion process are used for the regulation of the regulated values influencing the process. The modeled combustion process is corrected by a comparison between the output quantities (5,6) of the actual combustion process (3) and the modeled combustion process.
