The bicapstan winch has a shock absorber (1) between the winch and a cable reel. The damper has a spring (100) inside a cylindrical housing (10) and a tensioning cable pulley (11) attached to the end of the spring by a rigid shaft (110). The end position of the spring in use is selected to be approximately half of its travel and is detected by a winch speed regulating circuit.
