The method for controlling an i.c. engine able to operate either in weak or rich modes consists of determining the quantity of fuel reintroduced on the rich mode. This quantity is used to determine a Lamda coefficient. The Lamda coefficient is predefined from an air quantity, from the quantity of injected fuel and from a quantity of unburnt fuel.
