The fuel cell (10) has two end plates (12,22) enclosing anode (16) and cathode (20), with a polymer membrane (18) between. The anode is supplied with fuel through a hole (28) in the end plate (12), with the fuel passing through a porous layer (14). The cathode has fuel supply and drainage passages, and has on its inner face a network of grooves (C1,C2,C3) to distribute fuel over the cathode.
