The chair lift has a guide (1) extending up the staircase, and a carriage (2) which is able to run along the guide. The seat (3) is mounted on a second carriage (5) which is displaceable along the first carriage under the action of a motor driving a rack and pinion mechanism. The system includes a guide (1) extending up parallel to the incline of a staircase, and a carriage (2) which is able to run along the guide. A drive motor (4) advances the carriage along the guide. The seat (3) is mounted on a second carriage (5) which is displaceable along the length of the first carriage. The seat is thus moved from a position where it is at the lower end of the second carriage, which is in turn at the lower end of the guide, and thus at the lower floor level, to a second position where it is at the upper end of the second carriage, which is in turn at the upper end of the guide, and thus at the upper floor level. The guide and carriage have interlocking profiles, with a motor driven pinion engaging a rack along the profile surface to advance the seat up or down the line of the staircase.
