Preparation of carboxylic acids by oxidation of hydrocarbons with oxygen(-containing gas), in the presence of a solvent, based on a monocarboxylic acid, and an oxidation catalyst; hydrolysis of esters formed in the process is carried out by treatment of the reaction mixture before extraction of the carboxylic acids, or treatment of the organic phase after extraction of the carboxylic acids.
