The brake has a monostable and commutable free wheel (38) that allows actuation of the brakes (10) in a state of service and prevents release of the brakes. The free wheel allows release and actuation of the brakes in an out of service state. An actuation unit (20) presses a friction brake pad against a rotating body to apply braking. The actuation unit has gears to change rotational movement into a translatory movement. An Independent claim is also included for a method to regulate the functional play of an electromechanical brake.
