A tensioner for strip or wire material has a housing with a rectangular bore to hold a pair of grip jaws. The bore tapers to a narrower cross section at the grip mouth and is blind at the inner end. The end jaws are clamped onto the material via screw adjusters into each side of the housing and with sprung grips at the mouth end of the housing. The housing has a threaded connector at one end, to control the tension via screwing into the connection.
