The locking device (1) for the back of an automobile fold down rear seat consists of a locking part (7) fixed on a back sheet metal support (10) constituting a mobile element and a strike plate (8) fixed on the vehicle bodywork (9). The lock is enclosed in a plastic casing (11) comprising an articulation spindle (12) on which a locking hook (13) is mounted able to engage the strike plate by means of a transverse locking bar (14). The locking hook is controlled by a button (15) acting on the bar and against a return spring (16).
