Detecting or diagnosing the pathological prion protein (PrPsc) comprising treating a tissue or fluid sample, derived or obtained from a human or animal, with an antibiotic (I), preferably an aminoglycoside (Ia), is new. Independent claims are also included for: (1) use of (Ia) for eliminating PrPsc from tissues or fluids; and (2) kit for diagnosing PrPsc-related diseases that contains (Ia).
