Steel for use in a high strength pinion shaft which is not refined and used by applying a high frequency hardening,, contains, by weight %: (a) C : 0.45 - 0.55; (b) Si : 0.10 - 0.50; (c) Mn : 0.50 - 1.20; (d) P : 0.025 or less; (e) S : 0.025 or less; (f) Mo : 0.15 - 0.25; (g) B : 0.005 - 0.005; (h) Ti : 0.005 - 0.10; (i) N : 0.015 or less; (j) satisfies the relationship : 0.80 /approximately Ceq /approximately 0.95 and f value /approximately 1.0. An Independent claim is also included for the fabrication of this steel for use in a high strength pinion shaft.
