The process involves activating a compressor (5) during a movement of an internal combustion engine to refill fresh air in a cylinder that stops in an appropriate position for direct starting. The compressor is activated independent of the engine by an electric motor. The compressor is activated as a function of the angle of a crankshaft, during a last opening of an inlet valve of the cylinder, before the stop of the engine.
