The process is carried out in a number of stages: in Stage A the fluid contained in a given volume is divided into layers; in Stage B values representing modifications in microwave beams transmitted through the first of the layers are measured. In Stage C the composition of the fluid in the first layer is determined by comparing the values measured in Stage B with predetermined values for a fluid of known composition. Stage D consists of repeating Stages B and C for the remaining layers of the fluid, and the overall composition of the fluid is determined from the results obtained in the previous stages.
