Method for determining the state of (i) aging of the skin (or its progression) and/or (ii) alopecia by measuring the level of the marker HIF-1 (= hypoxia-inducible factor-1), characteristic of the state of hypoxia, in skin cell, hair follicles or hair. An independent claim is also included for an in vitro method for identifying compounds (A) for treatment of alopecia and/or aging of the skin by comparing levels of HIF-1 between samples treated and not treated with a test compound.
