Systems and methods for providing multiple object planes in an optical image scanner (100) are provided. One embodiment is an optical head (104) configured to scan an object (106), comprising a rod-lens array (110) positioned to focus light reflected off the object (106), an optical sensor array (112) for receiving light focused through the rod-lens array (110), and a reflective surface (108) variably positioned relative to the rod-lens array (110) for reflecting light from the object (106) to the rod-lens array (110). Another embodiment comprises a method for providing multiple object planes in an optical image scanner (100) comprising positioning an optical head (104) relative to a platen (102) to locate a primary focal point of a rod-lens array (110) at a first object plane and adjusting the position of an optical sensor array (112) relative to the rod-lens array (110) to relocate the primary focal point of the rod-lens array (110) at a second object plane. The sensor may be moved by a linear actuator or be mounted on a hinged surface.
