PPROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide layered lithium-nickel-based compound oxide powder for a high-density lithium secondary cell positive electrode material capable of providing a lithium secondary cell having large capacity and excellent in rate characteristics. PSOLUTION: The layered lithium-nickel-based compound oxide powder for the lithium secondary cell positive electrode material has a bulk density of 2.0 g/cc or higher, an average primary particle diameter B of 0.1 to 1 m, a secondary particle median diameter A of 9 to 20 m, and a ratio A/B of the secondary particle median diameter A to the average primary particle diameter B of 10 to 200. In production of the layered lithium-nickel-based compound oxide powder by spray drying a slurry in which a nickel compound and a transition metal element compound capable of substituting lithium other than nickel are dispersed in a liquid medium, then mixing the slurry with lithium compound and firing the mixture, the spray drying is carried out in conditions of 0.4 G/S 4 and G/S 0.0012 V, when the slurry viscosity at the time of the spray drying is represented by V (cp), the slurry supply amount by S (g/min), and the gas supply amount by G (L/min).
