PPROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To reduce displaying time of the classification of all the tape cassettes used for a VHS video recorder. PSOLUTION: A method for determination of the cassette classification of a cassette (1) which contains a recording medium (2) in the form of a tape for recording and/or replaying information using an apparatus having a measurement device for measuring the tape thickness and the tape length of the recording medium (2) has a first step for carrying out the measurement of the tape thickness for determining a value (d) for the tape thickness with precision of a degree by which the recording medium (2) can be classified from the point of the class of the tape classification fixed in advance by a standard, a second step for determining a value (L) for the tape length, and a third step for deciding the desired cassette classification by logically linking the value (d) for the tape classification class with the value (L) for the tape length.
