PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To monitor wavelength dispersion in a transmission path and to optimally compensate accumulated dispersions caused in the transmission path without interrupting a system operation and without changing its control method depending on a modulation system in an optical transmission system using a receiver whose identification level is a signal average level.;SOLUTION: The optical receiver applies photoelectric conversion and amplification to an optical signal passing through the transmission path and a variable dispersion compensation unit, thereafter detects a difference between average space levels for a time average value and an identification phase of the entire signal and controls the variable dispersion compensation unit so as to increase the difference between the average space levels at the time average value and the identification phase for the entirely detected signal.;COPYRIGHT: (C)2005,JPO&NCIPI
