PPROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide ultrafine TiC-transition metal based composite powder. PSOLUTION: In the method for manufacturing the ultrafine TiC-transition metal based composite powder, one of Ti-containing water-soluble salt, metatitanate [TiO(OH)SB2/SB] slurry and ultrafine titanium oxide powder and water-soluble metallic salt containing transition metal are dissolved in water, and the resultant mixed raw material is spray-dried to prepare precursor powder. The precursor powder is subjected to calcination heat treatment to prepare ultrafine Ti-transition metal compound oxide powder. Subsequently, nano-sized carbon particles are mixed with the ultrafine Ti-transition metal compound oxide powder and then dried.
