PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a polyester resin excellent in solvent resistance, processability, and corrosion resistance and suitable as a metal surface treating agent, to provide an aqueous dispersion of the resin, and to provide a metal surface treating agent using the dispersion.;SOLUTION: The polyester for the metal surface treating agent has a specific gravity of 1.30 to 1.40 and contains desirably at least one kind selected from the group consisting of ethylene glycol, diethylene glycol, and triethylene glycol in the total amount of 70 mol% or more, where the total polyglycol amount of the polyester is taken as 100 mol%.
