PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an effect imparting apparatus simulating distortion of sound recording and reproduction of a tape deck etc. in which only the distortion quantity is controlled without adding a variable resistor.;SOLUTION: The effect imparting apparatus is constituted in such a manner that an automatic makeup mode is set when the level of an input signal is adjusted, nonlinear conversion for simulating sound recording and reproduction of a magnetic tape, and then the level of an output signal is adjusted. When the mode is set, the apparatus finds and stores the sum of an input gain and an output gain and when level adjustment is performed by an input level adjusting means or output level adjusting means, both level adjusting means are controlled to operate while linked with each other so that the stored sum of gains does not vary.
