PPROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a probe for measuring carbon activity, capable of measuring carbon activity in a molten metal speedy and accurately, while being manufactured easily and inexpensively, and to provide a method for measuring carbon activity. PSOLUTION: A mixed sub-electrode 23 is combined with a conventional oxygen sensor 12. A solid electrolyte 13 of oxygen ion conductivity, including a standard electrode 15 is housed in a quartz cover, around which the mixed sub-electrode is arranged to form a sensor element 3. The mixed sub-electrode is a mixture of a carbonate and an oxide of sodium. With reference to the standard electrode, an opposite electrode 25 is arranged to form a carbon sensor 2. The carbon sensor 2 is immersed in a molten steel, causing the molten steel to flow-in from openings 7, 9, to form a local equilibrium between the carbonate and oxide of carbon, oxygen and sodium in the molten steel. Measuring the oxygen activity in the equilibrium layer allows measuring carbon activity. PCOPYRIGHT: (C)2005,JPO&NCIPI
