PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method which can industrially advantageously produce a Syn-1,3-diol compound.;SOLUTION: A compound (III) (wherein X is -CH=CH- or the like; R is an inert group under reducing conditions; and R¹ and R² are each a lower alkyl group or the like) is reacted with a mixture containing a borane compound (IIa) (wherein R³ and R⁴ are each a lower alkyl group or the like) or a borane compound (IIb) (wherein R⁵ is a lower alkyl or the like) and sodium boron hydride in a mixed solvent containing a lower alcohol and tetrahydrofuran to obtain the Syn-1,3-diol compound (I) (wherein one of Y¹ and Y² is oxygen and the other is a hydroxy group: and --- is a double bond when Y¹ and Y² bonded are oxygens and is a single bond when Y¹ and Y² bonded are hydroxy groups; X, R, R¹ and R² are the same as defined above).;COPYRIGHT: (C)2005,JPO&NCIPI
