PPROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an illumination optical system using a semiconductor laser device as a light source and a projector utilizing the same. PSOLUTION: The illumination optical system is provided with: a 1st semiconductor laser beam source (62) emitting the light of a 1st wavelength (R); a 2nd semiconductor laser beam source (64) emitting the light of a 2nd wavelength (G); a 3rd semiconductor laser beam source (66) emitting the light of a 3rd wavelength (B); a driving circuit (34) driving the 1st, 2nd and 3rd semiconductor lasers in specified timing; and a dichroic filter 68 on which light beams from the 1st, the 2nd and the 3rd semiconductor laser beam sources are made incident and which emits the light beams in a 1st direction.
